Chapter 10

David bit his lip as he sat on the black couch in the Pokémon Center. Giordan floated just beside him not quite touching the couch. Out of all the Pokémon, Nurse Joy had assessed that the ghostly gourd had received the least amount of damage and hadn’t needed to be seen to. The others were being cared for.

“It will be okay,” said the Gourgeist softly. “You got them all back here without further incident.”

“I know,” muttered David while staring down at his shoes. “But Casper was really hurt. I’m worried. What if Nurse Joy can’t do anything for him? Besides you, he’s my first evolution. He’s the first Pokémon I was able to fully connect to. I don’t want to lose him.”

“You won’t,” replied Giordan while placing a comforting vine on the boy’s shoulder. “Nurse Joy said you got him here in time. He’ll be okay. You’ll see.”

“I guess,” the boy replied while slouching further down the couch. “Thanks for trying to cheer me up.”

He glanced up as the doors of the Pokémon Center opened and a lady entered. She headed towards the counter without hesitation. She wore gray pants, fashionable brown boots and a burgundy and black shirt with a white collar and cuffs on the end of elbow-length sleeves. She wore a belt with an expensive looking equipment bag attached to it. In her arms was a yellow and black lizard-like Pokémon. She handed the Pokémon to the nurse before turning around to sweep the rest of the Pokémon Center with bright green eyes.

“Hello,” said the lady as she approached David and gestured to the couch beside him. “Is there anyone sitting here?”

David shook his head.

“Oh good,” she replied as she sat on the black couch and brushed some of her brown hair out of her face. “I’m Alexa by the way. Nice to meet you.”

“David,” replied the boy.

“Hello David,” replied the young woman. “What brings a young man like you to Santalune City? I’m here to visit my sister and I figured I’d get my Helioptile checked up. It’s been a while since I’ve visited the Pokémon Center. Want to be looking our best.”

“Uh-huh,” said David with a raised eyebrow. “I’m just waiting for my Pokémon to be healed.”

“He’s just worried about his Butterfree,” muttered Giordan in a tone that suggested he didn’t expect to be understood. “He’s usually a little more upbeat.”

“Oh, is this your Gourgeist?” asked Alexa with a smile. “How did you catch him?”

“His name is Giordan,” replied David while placing a hand on one of his vines in a reassuring gesture. “I received him as a Pumpkaboo in a Wonder Trade. I’m doing a Wonderlocke Challenge.”

“Oh really?” asked Alexa with widened green eyes. She began rummaging through her bag. “What, may I ask, has inspired you to take on such a unique challenge?”

“I don’t really want to talk about it,” mumbled David.

“You don’t really have to talk about it if you don’t want to,” she replied while pulling a note pad and a pencil out of her equipment bag. “I am a journalist after all, but I won’t pry it out of you if you don’t want to talk about it. It’s just that it’s not every day I meet someone so young taking on a Wonderlocke Challenge. It’s the kind of story I’m sure my readers would be interested in following. Do you have any badges yet?”

“Oh?” asked the boy in slight alarm. “No, not yet. I was training for the gym and had to return to the Pokémon Center to heal my injured Pokémon.”

“Ahh,” said the woman with a nod. “In that case, you’re going to want to train to defeat Bug-types. That’s what the Gym Leader here in Santalune City uses. She can also be a tricky opponent for beginning trainers. If I were you, I wouldn’t use Jordan.”

“Yeah,” muttered David. “Grass-types are weak against Bugs. And it’s Giordan with a soft G-I instead of a J.”

“Oh, sorry about that,” Alexa said while addressing the peeved Gourgeist. “It’s unusual to come across that name spelled like that. My bad.”

“It’s okay,” replied the boy. “I picked names for the Pokémon I received based on their species of Pokémon they are. My Butterfree is called Casper because he was a Caterpie when I got him.”

“That is an interesting way to nickname your Pokémon,” she said in intrigue. She glanced back at the front counter when her name was spoken loudly by Nurse Joy. “Anyways, it looks like my Helioptile is in top shape.”

She got up from the couch and started towards the counter. She halted halfway there and turned back towards David.

“I’m going to be in town for a few days,” said Alexa brightly. “Who knows. I might be able to catch your gym battle while I’m here.”

“Okay,” said David softly.

Alexa retrieved her yellow and black Pokémon from the counter and placed it on her shoulder. “Bye David,” she said brightly as she waved and left out the automatic doors of the Pokémon Center.

“She’s right,” said the Gourgeist once the woman was gone. “You would be better off training someone else on the Black Team other than me. Who else is in my group?”

“A Snivy I called Stevie,” answered David automatically. “But he’s not going to be much help as he’s also a Grass-type. The other is a Squirtle nicknamed Spike. I guess I can train him.”

“By all means,” agreed Giordan.

“David,” called Nurse Joy.

The boy left the couch and walked swiftly to the counter with his Gourgeist following him.

“Scottie and Brylie have been fully healed,” replied the cheerful nurse as she placed them on the counter. “Wenona, Fredric and Casper will be a while yet. They are all healing fine. Make sure you be careful in any future training you do.”

“Thanks,” said David. “So Casper isn’t going to die?”

“Nope,” replied Nurse Joy. “You were lucky this time. Be more careful in the future. You don’t want to be losing team members this early in your training.”

“Thanks, and I know,” replied the boy as the nurse hurried back into the employee area of the Pokémon Center.

“She was really nice to us,” said Scottie with a wide grin.

“I don’t know about you, but I got these,” said Brylie as she uncurled her ear to reveal a keychain. “I say we find a Klefki and give them to it. She’ll never get them back!”

“Brylie!” exclaimed David trying to snatch the keys from her. “Give those here!”

“Come and get them,” said the bunny Pokémon as she hopped off the counter and out the automatic doors.

“Gah!” yelped David as he started chasing after her. “Get back here!”

This is a Fanfiction featuring the Wonderlocke mechanic under my own rules.

Talon's Rules
1. All Pokemon (with maybe the exception of your starter if you so wish) must have been obtained within a Wonder Trade upon starting the game.
2. You have six slots in your party. You must have three pokemon you can interchange per slot. Pokemon from the same group slot can never be in your party at the same time. Only one per group slot at a time. You will have a grand total of eighteen pokemon as part of your team.
3. If a Pokemon should faint, it is considered "DEAD" and must be either released or placed in the PC. Once all three pokemon from a group slot have fainted, you can only use five pokemon at a time.
4. No buying items (with the exception of the Poke Balls used to aid you in your Wonder Trade). All items are found in the region (or if you are super lucky, you may be able to rely on a pokemon whose ability is Pick Up as I have).

I do not own any characters that may coincide with characters from the games.

Although Alexa is a Character from the actual game, she will be making appearances as David travels around the Kalos region. Along with Max (introduced in Chapter 2), she will be taking the places of the rivals/friends. She will be crossing his path every once in a while as a travelling journalist and will be taking an interest in his adventure.

On a side note, this was my first attempt at shading in hair! XD
